Overall plot:
The story takes place in a secluded village, hidden deep within the Carpathian Mountains of Romania in 1971. When it does, the reason behind that becomes apparent: The village is famous for its old, decaying cathedral—once a house of worship, it now is a site of mystery and speculation. Most of the part has emptied; most of the inhabitants moved to other places—the reason why strange, bizarre happenings became unavoidable. The tower, Gothic as it is, towers ominously over the village, its architecture imposing. Vines have grown so long they wrap around the stone walls, while a constant fog cloaks the construction, heightening the ominous tone of the cathedral.
Main Characters:
Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga)—Only returning protagonist: Sister Irene is drawn again to fighting forces of darkness. She is now much older, a seasoned woman still grappling with the spiritual and emotional reverberations of her last encounter with Valak. Her faith is put to the test against newer horrors.
Father Tomas (see new character, Oscar Isaac; just in case this is something you read out of context)—a skeptical but very caring priest who has come out there to investigate these strange happenings in and around the cathedral. It has something to do with his personal relations with the church, as he is now haunted by visions drawing him to memories of the church's horrible past—having lost his father, who served as head priest there.
Mira (new character, acted by Florence Pugh)—a young woman from the village whose family was ravaged by the demonic forces. Her goal is not just vengeance but redemption for what her ancestors did, indirectly participating in the rites that unleashed Valak upon the world.
Faith and Doubt in Balance - Inner conflicts escalate for Irene, as she battles with the faith she believes in in the ceaseless presence of gross evil.
Guilt and Redemption - Mira's pilgrimage to atone for the sins of her ancestors appears to be a thing forged in penitentials and evocation of redemption.
The Endurance of Evil—That is, evil—like Valak—is never vanquished. It hides and bides its time, waiting for the opportunity.
Relation to the Conjuring Universe:
There will be mention of the Warrens in the movie; during his investigation, Father Tomas discovers a file from Ed and Lorraine Warren that indicates that a much bigger demonic entity is afflicting the cathedral, one attached to Valak's background. The relic that originally called upon Valak back in The Nun is at the center of this film as the source of the ongoing evil.
The Counter player or Paragon of Darkness:
It introduces a new supernatural aspect into the mythos—a cursed ritual artifact from olden times, bound with a pact the founding monks made many centuries ago. The object magnifies Valak's powers, now unfurling the demonic's new otherworldly potential, pride. At first, it requires destruction before it fully manifests again. In order to do that, they must delve into rites of exorcism, a dark knowledge lost to the sands of time.
Overall Tone and Atmosphere:
By keeping the eerie, gothic ambience that made the entire series a household name, the film continues to do its work, with its shadowy, mist-shrouded terrain, its crumbling architecture, and and its ever-present sense of fear and foreboding. More than enough to build some tension and lore within its close quarters, some juicy supernatural weirdness, and cathedral backstory.
