A very over-the-top camp horror survival film, directed by Isaac Gabaeff. The premise might be silly, but the treatment is inventive. After a wild graduation beach blowout, some friends wake up on a beach in which the sand appears to be carnivorous. It consumes everything that comes into contact with the sand, leaving survivors to occupy a small perch on car hoods, lifeguard towers and a single boat while desperately seeking an escape.

There’s not even a moment for the movie to start before it’s begun, the spaces under the desk and the cabinets that line the walls close together as most of the action happens as the group finds itself at its own throat, white knuckles against Friyay’s frailty pitted against the inactivity brought against relationships ravaged by hunger pangs, exhaustion and horrible trust. Brooke Butler, Cleo Berry and Cynthia Murell lead the cast, and they are fairly good — if a bit overwrought or clichéd at times. There’s also fun in the film, which draws on B-movie aesthetics as practical effects and lame CGI combine to show the horror and the aliveness of that sand.

But it’s pretty predictable and very basic; The Sand has a modicum of tension and lulz mixed in to maintain the viewer’s attention. It’s a good swirl of black comedy and horror, though it never wholly allows itself to get out of low-budget conditions. This is probably going to amuse most fans of creature features or offbeat survival stories.
